What is an XER file?
An XER file is Oracle Primavera P6's native exchange format: a plain-text export containing activities, WBS structure, relationships, calendars, resources and progress for one or more projects. It is how P6 schedules move between contractors, consultants and owners.
Because XER is a P6 export format rather than a document format, a normal viewer cannot open it usefully. You need something that rebuilds the CPM network — activities, logic, calendars and float — to read the schedule the way the planner intended.
How to open an XER file in TideLine
Create an account, open the Schedule module and load the .xer file. TideLine parses the activity table, WBS and relationships, then recalculates the critical path so you can see early and late dates, total float and the driving chain.
From there the same project feeds every other module: Quality for schedule integrity checks, Metrics for float and earned-value curves, Delay for window analysis, and Design for presentation exports.
Beyond viewing: analysing what the schedule says
Viewing an XER answers 'what does the programme show'. Analysis answers 'is it credible, and what changed'. TideLine compares a baseline against later updates, highlights logic and duration changes, tracks critical-path movement update by update, and quantifies delay windows.
That is the difference between reading a bar chart and being able to defend or challenge a claim built on it.
